Detail
The weldability of 1.4571 is excellent. The titanium addition significantly reduces the risk of carbide precipitation during welding, which in turn greatly lowers the likelihood of intergranular corrosion. The material is weldable with all common welding processes and generally does not require post-weld heat treatment. It can be welded with or without filler metal. Heat tint may form during welding and must be removed using chloride-free chemical or mechanical methods.
Detail
The machinability of 1.4571 is poor. The titanium addition increases tool wear and hardness compared with similar alloys such as 1.4401 or 1.4404. Carbide tools and adjusted cutting speeds are therefore particularly important.
Detail
1.4571 has good forgeability. It is typically preheated to 1150–1180°C and forged in the range 950–1180°C. Subsequent cooling is performed in air or water.
Detail
Due to its austenitic structure, 1.4571 is non-magnetic, although slight magnetic response can be induced by certain post-treatments.
Detail
1.4571 offers very good corrosion resistance. The additions of molybdenum and titanium improve stability and resistance to aggressive environments. This provides excellent protection against intergranular corrosion and good resistance to natural and low-salinity or low-chloride environments. However, the material is susceptible to seawater, so its use in marine environments is limited.
