Titanium Grade 5 has very high weldability. This is mainly due to a favorable alloy composition and a high melting point. Mechanical properties are generally not affected by welding, but pre-treatments are necessary to avoid nitrogen, oxygen, or hydrogen contamination. Welding results are typically precise and do not impair the material's corrosion resistance. The material can be welded easily in various states, including solution-treated and mid-aged conditions. Both gas-shielded and non-gas methods are possible. For welding without shielding gas, spot, seam and resistance butt welding are particularly suitable. Solid bare wire is recommended as filler material.

The machinability of Titanium Grade 5 is low. Compared to other titanium materials, this alloy is harder and therefore has very high strength, which complicates machining. Diffusion reactions with oxygen during machining lead to high tool wear under high thermal load. Low thermal conductivity exacerbates this because less heat is removed through the material or chips, increasing thermal stress. To machine Grade 5 effectively, ensure sufficient coolant, use low cutting speeds, and apply high feed rates.

The material forges well. Grade 5 is heated to an appropriate temperature and forged below the beta transus of 980°C. Cooling is then done in air. It is important to cool in a controlled and slow manner to avoid crack formation.

Grade 5 is non-magnetic. This makes it especially interesting for medical applications such as implants or use in medical devices.

Titanium Grade 5 offers excellent corrosion resistance. It provides strong protection in oxidizing environments, against alkaline, gas- and oil-containing media, as well as against saline solutions and mildly reducing environments. The material also offers high corrosion protection in seawater and general marine environments, making it suitable for many applications.
