Detail
Titanium Grade 2 has very good weldability. This is mainly because the material is predominantly single-phase, which reduces the risk of alpha-phase microstructure changes during heat input. That lowers the likelihood of intergranular corrosion and alterations of mechanical properties. Welds are typically precise and do not impair the material's corrosion resistance. In general, Grade 2 can be welded with common welding methods. Welding temperatures are typically in the range of 950–1150°C.
Detail
Machinability of Titanium Grade 2 is classified as low. Although this alloy is somewhat softer than some other titanium grades, its high strength makes machining difficult. Diffusion reactions with oxygen during processing lead to accelerated tool wear at elevated temperatures. The low thermal conductivity worsens this by limiting heat dissipation through the workpiece and chips, increasing thermal load. To machine Grade 2 effectively, use ample coolant, low cutting speeds, and high feed rates.
Detail
The material forges well. Grade 2 is heated to an appropriate forming temperature and forged up to about 900°C, followed by air cooling. Controlled, slow cooling is important to avoid crack formation.
Detail
Grade 2 is non-magnetic, which is advantageous for medical applications such as implants and medical devices.
Detail
Titanium Grade 2 offers excellent corrosion resistance. Its essentially pure structure is not substantially altered by heat treatments such as welding, so its protective behavior is retained. The material provides strong protection in oxidizing environments, against alkaline and chloride-containing media, saline solutions, and mildly reducing conditions. It also performs very well in seawater and marine environments, making it suitable for many applications.
