Detail
1.4401 is a stainless steel with good weldability. It can generally be welded with almost all common welding processes. Using a filler material can be beneficial to increase corrosion resistance, as it helps prevent carbide precipitation. This filler is not strictly required. After welding, heat treatment is recommended and thorough cleaning of the weld is advised.
Detail
The machinability of 1.4401 is rated as medium. A slightly higher carbon content compared to 1.4404 and a somewhat higher molybdenum content reduce machinability. Both elements make cutting more difficult. Successful machining can be achieved using cutting fluids and carbide tools.
Detail
1.4401 forges well. Start with a slow heat-up to approximately 1150–1200°C, then forge in the range of 950–1180°C. Final cooling may be by air or water. Scale and temper colors can form during forging, which can reduce corrosion resistance; these can be removed by chloride-free chemical and mechanical methods.
Detail
Due to its austenitic structure, 1.4401 is non-magnetic, although cold working can induce some magnetic response. In practice this usually does not affect typical applications.
Detail
1.4401 generally exhibits very good corrosion resistance. It provides high protection against natural environmental influences and moderate salt and chloride concentrations. The molybdenum content contributes to increased resistance against pitting and crevice corrosion. However, due to the relatively higher carbon content, this material is not resistant to intergranular corrosion without appropriate measures.
