Detail
EN AW 5005 has excellent weldability. Due to the uniform distribution of magnesium and low susceptibility to hot cracking, the material is highly crack‑resistant during and after welding. It can be reliably welded with common processes such as MIG and TIG. Generally no special heat treatment is required after welding, as the alloy is not severely affected by the welding thermal cycle. Weld seams typically show high quality and a clean surface.
Detail
EN AW 5005 has moderate machinability. Achieving good results requires careful selection of tools and machining parameters. Carbide tools and appropriate cutting fluids are recommended to improve efficiency and surface finish. High cutting speeds and moderate to high feed rates are possible without significantly degrading surface quality. Machining usually produces long, continuous chips.
Detail
EN AW 5005 has poor forgeability. The material is normally processed by cold forming, particularly bending and deep drawing. Only in a hot‑rolled condition might limited forging be possible; in practice other forming methods are typically preferred.
Detail
Aluminium is non‑magnetic. The addition of magnesium does not render the alloy magnetic.
Detail
EN AW 5005 is known for its excellent corrosion resistance, especially in atmospheric environments and in contact with seawater. This performance is mainly due to the natural oxide film that reliably protects the surface. The alloy is also resistant to other corrosion forms such as stress corrosion cracking and pitting, which makes it attractive for many industries, including food‑contact applications.
