Detail
S275JR bzw. 1.0044 is readily weldable. Preheating is generally not required, except for somewhat thicker cross-sections between 25mm and 30mm or when ambient temperatures are below 5°C. In those cases a preheat of 100°C to 150°C is recommended to avoid stress cracking.
Detail
The steel shows good machinability, especially in the soft-annealed condition. High-speed steel tools and carbide tools are well suited. For longer tool life and improved surface finish, tools coated with TiN (titanium nitride) or TiAlN (titanium aluminum nitride) are recommended. Tool wear can be further reduced by using coolants/lubricants.
Detail
The S275JR material is strongly magnetic.
Detail
S275JR forges well. Recommended forging temperature is between 1.100°C and 1.250°C. It is important to finish forging at 850°C, otherwise ductility decreases. To prevent residual stresses and cracking, the steel should cool slowly after forging.
Detail
Without additional surface protection the steel can rust quickly in humid environments. The material can be coated with corrosion protection agents or oils, and the surface can be permanently protected by hot-dip galvanizing. For permanently corrosive environments it is advisable to select other materials unless a protective coating is applied.
