16MnCr5 has poor weldability. To reduce stresses and cracking, especially in thicker sections, preheating to 150°C to 200°C is recommended. After forging, a stress-relief anneal at about 650°C to 680°C is suitable to increase the toughness of the weld.

16MnCr5 machines well in the soft-annealed condition. In the hardened condition machinability is reduced; the use of cutting fluids is recommended. Cutting parameters and tooling must be selected according to the material condition to achieve good surface quality.

As a steel material, 16MnCr5 is strongly magnetic.

The material has good forgeability. The forging temperature range is 850°C to 1100°C, the same temperatures used for rolling.

16MnCr5 has moderate corrosion resistance. Without additional surface treatment it can rust in humid or corrosive environments. Post-treatments such as nitriding or EDM can improve surface corrosion resistance.
