What is Vacuum Casting? The basics and how it works

Vacuum casting is a cost-effective manufacturing process for producing prototypes and small batches of high-quality plastic parts. In this process, a flexible silicone or polyurethane mould is filled with liquid plastic. The vacuum ensures that the plastic is precisely drawn into all the fine details of the mould. After curing, the mould is removed, leaving behind the finished plastic part. This method allows the production of extremely complex shapes and fine details.

Compared to 3D printing, vacuum casting offers significantly higher quality. Even small quantities can be produced more quickly and cost-effectively with this method than with 3D printing.

While the silicone mould, which can be quickly produced, wears out faster – a disadvantage compared to injection moulding – changes to the design can be implemented cost-effectively since no expensive tooling is required. This also reduces initial investment costs, making the process particularly cost-effective for small batches compared to injection moulding.
